Important Information:
Selenium 74 Metal (Selenium-74) is a stable (non-radioactive) isotope of Selenium. It is both naturally occurring and produced by fission. Selenium 74 Metal is used for biological and biomedical labeling, as target materials and other applications. Additionally, it has special application in bioavailability as an essential nutrient.
Selenium Metal is also available in ultra high puritynanoparticles. For thin film applications it is available as rod, pellets, pieces, granules and sputtering targets and as either an ingot or powder. and as
Selenium is a Block P, Group 16, Period 4 element.
Selenium exhibits both photovoltaic action, where light is converted directly into electricity, and photoconductive action, where the electrical resistance decreases with increased illumination. These properties make selenium useful in the production of photocells and exposure meters for photographic use, as well as solar cells. Below its melting point, selenium is a p-type semiconductor and has many uses in electronic and solid-state applications.
Presently, the largest use of Selenium world-wide is in glass manufacturing, followed by uses in chemicals and pigments. Electronic use, despite a number of continued applications, continues to decline.
Selenium is available as metal and compounds with purities from 99% to 99.9999% (ACS grade to ultra-high purity); metals in the form of foil, sputtering target, and rod, and compounds as submicron and nanopowder. Selenium was first discovered by Jons Berzelius in 1817.
Today, most Selenium is obtained as a by-product of refining copper, Cu.
